Foodpanda To Exit Thailand’s Market After Years of Losses

Foodpanda will cease its food and grocery delivery operations in Thailand on May 23, 2025, as announced by its parent company, Delivery Hero, on Wednesday.

The move reflects Delivery Hero’s ongoing strategy to refine its global footprint, as seen in its earlier exits from markets such as Denmark, Ghana, Slovakia, and Slovenia, according to a statement from the Berlin-headquartered company.

Delivery Hero will shift its focus to other parts of the Asia-Pacific region, where it anticipates higher returns, the company noted.

Despite the closure, the regional team based in Thailand—which handles services like marketing and human resources for the Asia-Pacific—will continue operations as usual.

“Delivery Hero thanks its employees, customers, partners, and riders in Thailand, and is committed to supporting them during the transition period,” the statement added.

Facing intense competition in Thailand’s food delivery sector, Foodpanda held a market share of just under 15%, trailing far behind Lineman Wongnai at 44% and GrabFood at 39.4%.

In a market estimated to be worth 86 billion baht, only GrabFood has begun turning a modest profit. Foodpanda reported cumulative losses of nearly 3.8 billion baht for 2022 and 2023, with no figures yet available for 2024.

Last year, Delivery Hero attempted to sell part of its Foodpanda business in Southeast Asia but was unable to reach an agreement with potential buyers.

Although the buyer was not officially identified, earlier reports indicated that Singapore-based Grab and China’s Meituan—both seeking to strengthen their presence in Southeast Asia—were among the interested parties.
