TikTok To Allocate 300 Billion Baht for Thailand’s Tech Future

TikTok recently announced a plan to invest approximately 300 billion baht in Thailand within the next five years, aiming to elevate the country as a leading technology hub in Asean.

During a recent meeting in Bangkok, TikTok’s vice-president of public policy, Helena Lersch, discussed this initiative with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, according to government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub.

Ms. Lersch expressed her appreciation for the support provided by the Thai government for their investments and operational activities in the country.

She also acknowledged the prime minister’s efforts in creating policies that encourage investment and confirmed TikTok’s dedication to working closely with the government and relevant stakeholders to advance Thailand into the digital era.

Owned by a Chinese corporation, TikTok plans to channel US$8.8 billion (300 billion baht) into Thailand’s technology infrastructure over the next five years.

The investment plan includes setting up a data hosting center to enhance data management for users in Thailand and the wider Southeast Asia region, positioning Thailand as a pivotal technology hub.

During the talks, Mr. Jirayu mentioned that the government stressed the importance of improving media literacy, with Ms. Paetongtarn ready to join forces with TikTok to tackle issues of fake news and online fraud.

TikTok’s leadership team has affirmed their commitment to collaborate with the government in monitoring content and initiating campaigns that promote digital literacy, which is aimed at increasing awareness of online threats and enhancing consumer protection.

This partnership marks a significant advancement in strengthening public-private collaborations in the digital age, contributing to the growth of Thailand’s economy.

Ms. Paetongtarn expressed gratitude towards TikTok for investing in a data hosting center in Thailand and commended their efforts to promote Thai products on the TikTok Shop platform.

She also lauded TikTok for its role in showcasing Thai culture and tourism through content creation, thereby opening new avenues for Thai entrepreneurs and content creators to reach international markets.

Ms. Lersch highlighted that TikTok boasts over 50 million users in Thailand, with more than 3 million accounts actively engaging on the TikTok Shop platform, including the Thai prime minister.

She noted that the company employs over 1,000 Thai individuals.

Ms. Paetongtarn acknowledged the significant impact of TikTok in connecting people and enhancing creativity, which contributes to the economic drive of the nation.

The prime minister also recognized the platform’s role not only as a source of entertainment but also as a significant contributor to job creation and cultural exchange.
