Central Pattana Drives Songkran’s Global Rise as Festival Economy Gains Momentum

Songkran is regarded as the world’s largest water festival, marking the Thai New Year and attracting millions of revellers annually. Central Pattana, the leading retail developer in the country, has launched a nationwide campaign for the imminent celebrations, aiming to position the festivities as a globally recognised cultural occasion of crucial significance, while strengthening its role as a key driver of Thailand’s festival economy.

With an investment of 500 million baht, the vibrant “Thailand Songkran Festival 2026” will feature 28 water-play landmarks, more than 400 leading artists, and over 1,000 events across 44 Central shopping centres nationwide, alongside extended Wan Lai festivities, further reinforcing its standing as a driving force in “culturetainment” and a nationwide platform connecting culture, entertainment, and tourism.

From dynamic splashing activities to traditional performances and Buddhist water-pouring ceremonies, guests are invited to make their way to the nearest Central shopping centres across the kingdom and enjoy a truly mesmerising Songkran experience unlike any other.

A Collaborative Effort To Advance Songkran as a World-Class Festival

Central Pattana is partnering with premier public and private sector organisations, such as the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Ministry of Culture, along with leading partners including Bassline Entertainment Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Plan B Media Pcl., Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand) Co., Ltd., Chang Mineral Water, Boonrawd Trading Co., Ltd., Singha Life, JLC Group Co., Ltd. (Jula’s Herb), Rev Edition Co., Ltd. (Goodr, Champion, Teva), Taokaenoi Food & Marketing Plc., and Ing CK Co., Ltd., as part of a broader effort to promote economic growth and strengthen Thailand’s tourism sector during the peak season.

Dr. Nattakit Tangpoonsinthana, Chief Marketing Officer of Central Pattana Plc., believes the festival has already gained strong global recognition and that this collaboration will further elevate its status—positioning Songkran alongside world-renowned festivals such as Rio Carnival, Oktoberfest, and Holi, and making it a “must-visit” experience for travellers worldwide. He added that the campaign is designed to enhance the nationwide ecosystem by uniting entertainment, culture, and tourism through the “Central Songkran: World’s Biggest Water Festival” platform.

Central Pattana executive emphasised that Songkran has evolved into a powerful “culturetainment” platform capable of generating both travel and spending simultaneously across the country—an increasingly important driver of Thailand’s festival economy.

The initiative also taps into the growing influence of “Gen Z and the fandom economy,” leveraging fan engagement to drive traffic and spending. With Gen Z accounting for over 20% of Thailand’s population and influencing trillions of baht in annual spending, the campaign integrates artist meet-and-greet experiences and nationwide roadshows to convert entertainment into economic impact.

A definite highlight this year is Miss World Opal Suchata Chuangsri, who will assume the role of “Miss Songkran” in a world-first appearance for a Miss World titleholder. In a highly anticipated moment for pageant fans, she will appear for the first time in traditional Thai attire while wearing the Miss World crown, creating a historic crossover between global pageantry and Thai cultural heritage. The appearance is set to showcase Thailand’s cultural elegance on the global stage, blending timeless tradition with a contemporary international spotlight. Meanwhile, the “Songkran Princes” are portrayed by Thomas & Kong, alongside a wider lineup of popular Y-series (Boys’ Love) actors and actresses, forming part of a broader fandom-driven engagement strategy.

Over six consecutive days from April 9 to 14, a collection of Y-series actors will make appearances across multiple Central locations nationwide, creating large-scale fan engagement moments designed to attract younger audiences and amplify festival participation.

This large-scale initiative, expected to attract participants nationwide, also embraces the modern “Sabai with jeans” trend—a contemporary fashion movement that blends traditional Thai attire with everyday style, reflecting Thailand’s soft power on a global stage.
