Bangkok-based fitness coach Leroy Saunders has died after collapsing during the HYROX Bangkok 2026 competition last Thursday, his family confirmed on Tuesday.
The 41-year-old South African lost consciousness while participating in the event at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. He was resuscitated at the venue before being transported to hospital, according to a statement shared on his Instagram account.
His family said the circumstances surrounding his death had not yet been fully established and asked HYROX representatives and the media to refrain from commenting until his relatives and team had a clearer understanding of what happened.
“What we can share without doubt is that until the last second of this moment, Leroy lived his life without regret or hesitation and impacted hundreds if not thousands to do the same throughout his journey,” said a statement posted on his Instagram page.
“We are aware everyone would like closure and a better understanding, and we are working hard to be able to offer this when the time is right.”
Saunders was the owner of IAOT CrossFit in Bangkok and was widely recognised for his strength and conditioning work with combat sports athletes.
He also founded Fight by Design, a physical training programme developed for Muay Thai fighters, mixed martial artists and boxers.
Founded in 2017, HYROX has developed a large international following as a demanding fitness competition designed to test participants’ strength, stamina and cardiovascular endurance.
Each race consists of eight kilometres of running, divided into one-kilometre segments, with competitors completing an intensive workout station between each run.
Although the competition is generally considered safe for healthy and properly trained participants, its physically demanding format carries potential risks.
Cardiologists have advised competitors to pay close attention to their cardiovascular health and undergo appropriate checks before taking part.
