The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is preparing to trial a new smart parking system at Lumpini Park in September, aiming to reduce congestion and improve convenience and security for visitors.
The initiative is intended to tackle the long-running problem of motorists leaving their vehicles in the park’s car park for extended periods while travelling to other locations. This practice has limited the number of spaces available to genuine park users, particularly during the busy morning and evening exercise periods.
The project forms part of the BMA’s wider efforts to modernise public facilities through technology and ensure parking spaces at one of Bangkok’s most popular green spaces are used more effectively.
The upgraded system covers the parking area near the Witthayu Road entrance and extends towards Sarasin Road. The facility provides 377 spaces for cars, including 348 standard parking bays and 29 double-parking spaces. A further 191 spaces are available for motorcycles.
Under the new system, automatic licence plate recognition technology will be introduced to record vehicles entering and leaving the car park. Visitors can also pay parking fees online by scanning a QR code, helping to reduce waiting times at entry and exit points.
Officials said the technology is capable of processing each vehicle in less than eight seconds.
Additional closed-circuit television cameras will also be installed throughout the parking area to strengthen security and improve monitoring.
The smart parking system is scheduled for a trial run from September 15 to 30. Officials will assess its performance and make any necessary adjustments before the system officially begins operating on October 1.
