Artificial intelligence is being deployed to identify and prevent suicide attempts from bridges in Bangkok, with the initiative first introduced at Rama VIII Bridge over the Chao Phraya River.
According to the Metropolitan Police Bureau, the programme is supported by the National Research Council of Thailand.
The project was launched in March last year with the aim of utilising artificial intelligence to reduce incidents of people attempting suicide from bridges. The initial installation of AI-enabled equipment took place on Rama VIII Bridge in Bangkok’s Bang Phlat district.
Pol Maj Gen Pitak Uthaitham said the bridge was selected for the pilot scheme after data identified it as a frequent location for suicide attempts.
He explained that the system continuously monitors activity on the bridge and triggers alerts to police when it detects behaviour consistent with individuals at risk of jumping. Officers are then dispatched to intervene and prevent potential incidents.
In cases where intervention is delayed, the technology is also capable of tracking individuals in the river and guiding rescue teams to their location.
Authorities noted that warning signs of pre-suicidal behaviour include pacing repeatedly, remaining motionless for extended periods, and attempting to climb over safety barriers.
Pol Maj Gen Pitak said the initiative could be extended to other high-risk bridges across the country if the pilot proves effective.
The Metropolitan Police Bureau held a meeting on the project at a Bangkok hotel on Friday. During the same period, two bodies were reportedly discovered beneath Rama VIII Bridge.
