Bangkok and surrounding provinces are being warned to prepare for heavy rain as unsettled weather continues to affect large parts of Thailand under the influence of the south-west monsoon.
The Thai Meteorological Department said on Saturday, June 20, that heavy rain was expected in parts of 48 provinces over the next 24 hours, with Bangkok and nearby provinces among the areas likely to experience downpours.
The East and the lower South are also expected to see heavy rain in some locations.
According to the department, the weather conditions are being caused by a moderate south-west monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. A low-pressure cell covering upper Vietnam is also adding to the unsettled conditions.
People living in Bangkok and other affected provinces have been advised to monitor weather updates and prepare for sudden heavy rain, especially during commuting hours.
Accumulated rainfall may lead to flooding in low-lying areas of the capital and nearby provinces, particularly in places where drainage is slow or where roads are already prone to waterlogging.
Authorities also warned that heavy and continuous rain could trigger flash floods and forest run-off in vulnerable areas, especially communities located near waterways, foothills, and low-lying zones.
Marine conditions are also expected to be rough in some areas. Waves in the upper Andaman Sea are forecast to reach one to two metres, while waves in the lower Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are expected to be around one metre.
In areas with thunderstorms, waves may rise above two metres.
Boat operators in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand have been urged to proceed with caution and avoid sailing in stormy areas until conditions improve.
