The Kesakomol Bridge in Bangkok’s Dusit district has been closed to all traffic for five days following a significant collapse where it intersects with Nakhon Chaisri Road.
This incident, which occurred around 9 p.m. on Sunday, resulted in a large sinkhole measuring 5 meters wide, 10 meters long, and 3 meters deep.
According to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the bridge will remain closed until repairs can be completed, with a target reopening time by midnight on Friday.
To ensure that pedestrians can still cross the area, the BMA has installed steel plates to cover the collapsed section, maintaining access across the Prem Prachakorn Canal.
For vehicle traffic, detours have been set up. Motorists traveling from Amnuay Songkram Road to Rama V Road are advised to take a right turn at the Pichai Intersection onto Nakhon Chaisri Road, then a left onto Rama V Road.
Conversely, those coming from Nakhon Chaisri towards Amnuay Songkram should turn left onto Rama V Road, then right at the Ratchawat Intersection onto Pichai Road, and left back onto Amnuay Songkram Road.
The cause of the collapse has been linked to a construction project on a 2-kilometer stretch of concrete pavement along the canal.
Niphan Sriruang, director of canals at the BMA’s Sewerage and Drainage Department, noted that the collapse was precipitated by a water pipe rupture.
This rupture led to erosion of the soil underneath the bridge, causing the structure to subside significantly.
