A powerful rainstorm brought parts of Lat Krabang to a standstill on Friday evening after strong winds tore through Chalong Krung Road, toppling around 40 power poles and leaving homes and businesses without electricity or internet.
The Lat Krabang district office said the incident occurred at about 5:30pm, with damage reported along a two-kilometre section of Chalong Krung Road between sois 31 and 57. Fallen poles and tangled power lines blocked both sides of the road, making the route completely impassable.
Police said witnesses described the storm as violent and sudden, with a swirling wind sweeping through the area before the power poles collapsed. Several homes were also damaged, with roofs ripped away by the force of the storm.
Around 30 vehicles were reportedly damaged during the incident. At least two people were believed to have been trapped inside their cars after power poles fell onto vehicles in the area.
In one case, witnesses said the front of a sedan was crushed by a fallen pole, leaving the driver trapped inside.
Rescue workers from the Ruam Katanyu Foundation, assisted by local residents, rushed to the scene with cutting equipment and worked through heavy rain to reach those affected.
Three people received first aid at the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. No deaths were reported.
Metropolitan Electricity Authority teams were later deployed to remove the collapsed poles and cables, while crews worked to restore electricity and internet services to hundreds of affected households and businesses.
