Protesters Stage Car Mob, Call on Prayut To Resign as PM

On Saturday afternoon, three groups of anti-government protesters took to Bangkok’s streets, demanding Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s resignation.

The Prachachon Khon Thai group, led by Nititorn Lamlua, a former co-leader of the now-defunct People’s Democratic Reform Committee or Yellow Shirts, met at the U-rupong intersection at around 3:00 p.m. before marching to Government House.

It was the third time the group has met to demand the government implement Section 272 of the Constitution to overthrow the prime minister.

The Thai Mai Thon group, led by Jatuporn Prompan, a former Red Shirts leader, met at Saphan Phan Fa on Ratchadamnoen Avenue before going to Government House. It was also the third time the group met to ask Gen Prayut to step down, but they let the parliament choose his replacement.

At 5:00 p.m., about 200 vehicles joined a “car mob” organized by Sombat Boonngam-anong, a red shirt and activist.

People who arrived in their vehicles drove from the Democracy Monument, crossing the Phra Pinklao Bridge and making a U-turn at the Arun Amarin intersection, to Saphan Phan Fa. They turned on the emergency lights and honked their horns while showing the three-finger salute before going to Government House.

Sombat used the signal of honking ahead of a curve or blind spot to represent the country’s political situation “without a seen future”.

The three groups could not reach their destination, where 900 troops were guarding with barbed wire and water trucks. The Prachachon Khon Thai group and the Thai Mai Thon group dispersed after some speeches by their leaders.

The Ratchaprasong intersection became the demonstration place for the car mob honking their horns until they completely dispersed.
