Three individuals sustained serious injuries following a collision between two tuk-tuks allegedly racing on a Bangkok roadway. The crash resulted in one tuk-tuk overturning, seriously injuring the driver with a head wound.
Authorities have been investigating the incident and are trying to determine the results of blood alcohol tests.
Late Monday night, two tuk-tuks speeding on a Bangkok street collided, resulting in severe injuries to three people, according to police.
Pol Lt-Col Thiradej Sonklin from the Bang Phong Phang Police Station reported that the crash occurred around 10 pm Monday on Ratchadaphisek Road in the Chong Nonsi subdistrict of Yannawa district.
Local eyewitnesses claimed that the two tuk-tuks seemed to be engaged in a race, with each driver aggressively trying to outpace the other.
Witnesses observed that one tuk-tuk driver attempted to switch lanes to overtake on the right, which led to a collision with the other vehicle, causing it to overturn.
The overturned tuk-tuk’s driver, 28-year-old Pichit, suffered a severe head injury with a deep laceration and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital.
Both the driver and the passenger of the second tuk-tuk sustained fractures in their legs.
Thiradej noted that the investigation into the cause of the race-like behavior is ongoing, and the results from the blood alcohol tests of the involved parties are pending.
Tuk-tuks, also known as auto-rickshaws, are a distinctive mode of transportation in Bangkok, popular with foreign tourists for their open-air design that provides a panoramic view of the surroundings.
These vehicles are known for their ability to maneuver through Bangkok’s congested roads and narrow alleyways.
