The government has confirmed plans to construct a substantial cruise terminal in Surat Thani by 2032 to bolster the island’s tourism sector and accommodate the increase in international cruise traffic.
Government Spokesman Jirayu Houngsub announced this during a Sunday visit to Surat Thani to review the port development’s progress, which had gained cabinet approval at a mobile session in Songkhla last month.
During his tour, Mr. Jirayu was briefed on the cruise terminal initiative and local drainage and sewage system improvements by officials, including Chatchai Manee, Koh Samui’s acting mayor, and Adul Raluekmoon, director of the Koh Samui Regional Marine Office.
The Marine Department has verified that the existing port in the Don Sak district is already facilitating the movement of tourists to Koh Samui.
Nevertheless, the forthcoming cruise terminal in Koh Samui represents a major enhancement, with construction set to start in 2029 and completion expected by 2032.
“The government is committed to improving infrastructure in the southern region to stimulate economic growth, boost tourism, and ensure sustainable resource management,” Mr. Jirayu said.
The group also toured the chosen site for the terminal in the Laem Hin Khom area of tambon Taling Ngam, situated about 15 kilometers from the district center, where they examined the land expropriation process, which is largely supported by the local community.
Compensation will be provided to residents affected by the relocation.
The terminal, covering 47 rai, will feature a pier capable of accommodating two large cruise ships simultaneously, with capacities for 4,000 and 2,500 passengers, respectively.
The project is estimated to cost 12.172 billion baht and have a 30-year lifespan, expected to service 120 cruise routes per year and generate a minimum of 8 billion baht in revenue.
The Transport Ministry highlighted that the terminal is crucial for promoting Koh Samui’s development into a top international cruise destination.
