Airports of Thailand (AOT) plans to increase the passenger service charge (PSC) on outbound international flights at six of its major airports by 53 percent, a move the operator says is unlikely to affect passenger numbers.
AOT president Paweena Jariyathitipong said the international PSC would rise from 730 baht to 1,120 baht per passenger, while charges on domestic flights would remain unchanged.
The proposed adjustment will apply to outbound international travellers departing from Suvarnabhumi Airport, Don Mueang Airport, Phuket Airport, Hat Yai Airport, Chiang Mai Airport and Chiang Rai Airport.
Ms. Paweena said the increase is expected to generate an additional 10 billion baht in annual revenue.
The funds would be allocated toward improving airport security and upgrading facilities, including restrooms, electrical systems and air-conditioning, with the aim of enhancing overall passenger experience.
A portion of the additional income would also be retained as accumulated profit to support future infrastructure projects and help reduce reliance on borrowing.
Thailand is among a small number of countries that impose a PSC solely on outbound passengers.
Ms. Paweena noted that most countries levy charges on outbound, inbound and transit travellers, adding that international studies indicate PSC levels do not influence tourists’ decisions to travel.
“The main factors are air ticket prices and overall travel expenses,” she said.
The Civil Aviation Board has approved the proposal in principle, although final endorsement from the transport minister, who serves as the board’s ex-officio chairman, is still required. Ms Paweena expects final approval to be granted in May, following the general election.
