Heavy rain on Sunday night caused flash flooding across parts of Bangkok, Samut Prakan, and Pattaya, leaving several major roads submerged and traffic disrupted into Monday morning.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported flood levels ranging from 5 to 20 centimetres across multiple districts.
Affected areas include Laksi, Don Muang, Bang Sue, Lat Krabang, Sai Mai, Chatuchak, Din Daeng, Lat Phrao, Wang Thong Lang, Watthana, Huay Khwang, Bang Khen, Prawet, Bang Rak, Bang Kapi, Suan Luang, and Khlong Toey.
In Bang Sue, a flooded underpass was forced to close on Monday morning as officials worked to drain the water.
In Samut Prakan province, key roads such as Sukhumvit, Pu Chao Saming Phrai, Thepharak, Srinagarindra, and Phuttharaksa were also affected by heavy flooding, causing slow-moving traffic and transport delays.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said the city’s drainage system is designed to handle up to 60 millimetres of rainfall per day.
However, the volume recorded overnight far exceeded that limit, with 131.5 millimetres in Laksi, 116.5 millimetres in Bang Na, and 115.5 millimetres in Phra Khanong — some of the heaviest downpours of the year.
In Pattaya, waist-deep water was reported along sections of Sukhumvit Road stretching from North to South Pattaya, while parts of Pattaya 3 Road became impassable for smaller vehicles.
The Meteorological Department said rain in upper Thailand is expected to ease from Tuesday through Thursday, before increasing again on Friday and Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported ongoing flooding in parts of 12 provinces, including Phitsanulok, Ayutthaya, Nakhon Sawan, and Ubon Ratchathani, as cleanup and monitoring efforts continue.
