Former PM Thaksin Dismisses Rumours on Cabinet Reshuffle

Former Prime Minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, has dismissed rumors of a cabinet reshuffle that were sparked by a media report, suggesting that any changes might follow a no-confidence debate scheduled for next month.

Thaksin stated on Friday that his daughter, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has full confidence in her cabinet’s ability to work effectively, despite some ministries showing slow progress.

He emphasized that the coalition partners are maintaining open lines of communication to enhance their collective performance, negating any current need for a cabinet reshuffle.

Thaksin also addressed and dismissed rumors regarding the potential removal of United Thai Nation (UTN) Party leader Pirapan Salirathavibhaga from his position as energy minister, confirming that there are no issues between Pirapan and the prime minister.

He noted that Ms. Paetongtarn has occasionally tasked Mr. Pirapan with presiding over the National Energy Policy Committee meetings in her stead, acknowledging that some areas are progressing slowly and may require expedited action.

Thaksin highlighted the necessity for quick decision-making when addressing certain issues.

Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai provided a dramatic response when questioned about the reshuffle, touching his chest and asking, “Was I reshuffled too?”

A media report has indicated that the ruling Pheu Thai Party is contemplating swapping ministries with the Bhumjaithai Party, which currently oversees the Interior Ministry and the Labour Ministry.

It has been suggested that Pheu Thai is considering replacing Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan, as the party searches for a more suitable candidate.

Changes may also be in store for the UTN, potentially retaining one major ministerial role along with a deputy position.

Mr. Pirapan is under consideration for the role of justice minister, with the possibility of former energy minister Supattanapong Punmeechao making a comeback.

Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong of the Prachachat Party may be moved to the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, with the current minister, Varawut Silpa-archa of Chartthaipattana, possibly stepping in as the new foreign affairs minister in place of Maris Sangiampongsa.

Capt Thamanat Prompow, chief advisor of the Kla Dharma Party, might be slated to return as the minister of agriculture and cooperatives.
