A cruise terminal in Koh Samui is projected to open in 2032, aiming to enhance tourism in Surat Thani, according to Deputy Caretaker Minister Manaporn Charoensri.
Ms. Manaporn, along with Caretaker Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit, visited Koh Samui to check on the progress of key transport infrastructure projects in the area.
The ministry has several new projects underway, primarily focused on strengthening the tourism sector, Mr. Suriya said.
On Saturday, Ms. Manaporn stated that the Marine Department has completed a study on the 12.1-billion-baht cruise terminal project, which will cover 47 rai of land at Laem Hin Khom.
The study determined that the terminal location in tambon Taling Ngam is ideal due to its deep-sea environment, which serves as a natural windbreaker, and the ample space available for constructing a cruise port.
The study also addresses emergency response considerations and provides insights into the potential for full-scale commercial development and the site’s readiness to be served by public utilities, Ms. Manaporn noted.
It explores Public-Private Partnership (PPP) net cost investment as the most viable financing option for the cruise terminal project.
This approach is expected to generate at least 46 billion baht in economic benefits over 37 years, with an anticipated economic internal rate of return (EIRR) of more than 15%.
The Marine Department has submitted the study to the ministry, which will then forward it to the cabinet for review, Ms. Manaporn explained.
She mentioned that the ministry anticipates the project will be approved by next month, after which the bidding process will commence.
Construction is expected to begin in 2029 and take at least three years to complete. The cruise terminal is anticipated to be fully operational by 2032.
Ms. Manaporn added that the terminal is projected to accommodate 120 cruise landings annually and attract at least 180,000 cruise visitors each year.
The project has received positive feedback from private investors, as it is expected to boost tourism in the province, she said.
