MRTA Halts Purple Line Shuttle Service After Songtaew Dispute

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has suspended a newly launched free shuttle bus service along the Purple Line route in Nonthaburi, just hours after its trial run began on Monday, following reports of tension involving local songtaew operators.

The shuttle was introduced to improve connections for passengers using the Purple Line, with the route covering Khlong Bang Phai station, Talad Bang Yai station, Khlong Thanon Soi, and Kaeo In Road.

The pilot service began operating on Monday morning but was halted later the same afternoon after residents reported seeing local songtaew operators approach and speak with the shuttle bus driver.

Before the trial service was launched, songtaews, or open-air pickup taxis, had been the main transport option for commuters travelling between rail stations and nearby communities in the area.

The incident was later shared on social media, where it sparked mixed reactions from the public.

Supporters of the shuttle service said passengers should be given more reliable and accessible transport choices, particularly in areas where last-mile connectivity remains limited.

Some commuters said songtaew routes and timetables were often unclear, making journeys difficult to plan, while others complained that the vehicles were frequently overcrowded.

However, critics argued that a free shuttle service could reduce the income of songtaew drivers, many of whom operate under official transport concessions.

At 3pm on Monday, the MRTA confirmed that the trial shuttle service had been suspended, although it did not give a detailed reason for the decision.

The agency said it was working with relevant authorities to assess whether the route was appropriate before deciding whether the service should resume.

The MRTA has already been operating another free shuttle service since March last year, linking Thailand Cultural Centre station, Phra Ram 9 station, and the MRTA Office on Rama 9 Road.
