Phetchabun Residents Urged To Evacuate As Pa Sak River Swells

Residents along the Pa Sak River in Phetchabun’s Muang district have been urged to move belongings to higher ground as authorities brace for another round of flooding.

The warning comes as the river swells with runoff, raising fears that parts of the municipality could soon be inundated.

Governor Saranyu Meethongkham on Tuesday directed all agencies to remain on high alert and prepare for flood response operations.

A large surge of water is expected to reach Muang district by Tuesday night. To strengthen defences, the province has prepared 5,000 sandbags to protect vulnerable areas.

Municipal mayor Seksan Niyompeng said communities downstream from Lom Sak and Lom Kao districts face the greatest danger from the strong current. He also called on caregivers to be ready to evacuate bedridden patients and ensure their safety.

The flood front has already forced the closure of several roads and disrupted schooling, with at least five schools cancelling classes.

However, roads leading to the popular mountain destinations of Khao Khor and Phu Thap Boek remain unaffected, according to the provincial public relations office.

Thailand has been grappling with widespread floods since August 24, triggered by tropical storm Kajiki and intensified by storm Nongfa.

According to the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, the disasters have claimed 10 lives and left 15 others injured.

The Meteorological Department forecasts continued rainfall in the lower northern provinces, including Phetchabun, as well as in central and eastern regions, with conditions expected to persist until Thursday.
