Pheu Thai lawmakers have been directed to advocate for the casino-entertainment complex and political amnesty bills within their constituencies during the parliamentary recess, aiming to secure a smooth passage of the legislation.
Pheu Thai spokesperson and MP, Danuporn Punnakanta, revealed that Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has tasked the party’s MPs with assessing public sentiment on various issues, including the controversial initiative to legalize casino gambling, which has sparked divisions within the coalition.
The party’s cabinet ministers are also encouraged to collaborate closely with Pheu Thai MPs in the field to devise and implement effective solutions for the concerns raised by citizens, according to Mr. Danuporn.
Concerning the amnesty bill, Mr. Danuporn emphasized the critical need to clearly define the scope of the bill to prevent future disputes.
“We don’t want these bills to spark massive protests that could affect the structural integrity of the country,” he said.
The discussion on the casino-entertainment complex bill, initially scheduled for the current session of parliament, has been deferred to the next session starting July 2.
Experts believe the bill faces slim chances of approval due to resistance from key figures in the Bhumjaithai Party, the coalition’s second-largest member.
Bhumjaithai’s secretary-general, Chaichanok Chidchob, has publicly opposed the bill. However, party leader Anutin Charnvirakul clarified that Mr. Chaichanok’s statements represent his own views and not necessarily those of the party.
Mr. Anutin reiterated the party’s dedication to supporting the prime minister’s policies.
Government whip Wisut Chainarun has observed a positive shift in public opinion on the casino-entertainment complex bill.
Mr. Wisut pointed out that a better public understanding of the bill will help advance it.
According to Mr. Wisut, most Thais are not against the bill; they are keen to understand more about its potential economic benefits.
The fate of the bill in the upcoming session will hinge on the effectiveness of these public discussions, he noted.
