Phuket International Airport has defended newly installed signs that prohibit drivers from waiting or activating ride-hailing applications in front of the passenger terminal, after the notices sparked criticism on social media over concerns they could limit transport options for travellers.
Airport director Monchai Tanod said on Sunday that the signs were introduced to help regulate public transport operations within the airport area.
The measure is intended to prevent unauthorised vehicles from waiting near the terminal to solicit passengers or provide services outside designated pick-up zones.
Photos of the signs, which read “Waiting or opening any application to pick up passengers in this area is not permitted”, quickly circulated online and triggered debate about whether the airport was blocking app-based ride services.
Mr Monchai said the interpretation was incorrect and stressed that licensed platforms remain allowed to operate.
He explained that only authorised vehicles may pick up passengers within designated zones.
Approved services — including metered taxis, airport limousines, public buses, car-rental operators and licensed ride-hailing platforms such as Grab — continue to operate normally at the airport.
According to the airport director, all transport providers serving the airport must pass security and background checks, register vehicle and driver details, and comply with service standards.
These requirements allow authorities to track complaints and respond quickly if passengers encounter problems, something that cannot be done with unregistered drivers.
Mr Monchai added that two additional ride-hailing platforms, Bolt and inDriver, have already been approved by the Department of Land Transport and are currently applying for permission to operate within the airport grounds. Designated pick-up areas will be assigned once the review process is completed.
He said the signs are primarily aimed at preventing unauthorised drivers from loitering in restricted areas or approaching travellers directly, a practice that has led to complaints and raised safety concerns.
Phuket International Airport remains committed to improving passenger convenience, safety and fairness, and welcomes public feedback as it continues to upgrade transport management at the gateway, Mr Monchai said.
