Thailand is set to launch an automated biometric identification system at its six major international airports starting December 1 to improve the passenger identification process, offering more convenience and faster service, as announced by Airports of Thailand (AOT).
AOT President Kerati Kijmanawat announced that the new Automated Biometric Identification System would be installed at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK), Chiang Mai (CNX), Mae Fah Luang – Chiang Rai (CEI), Phuket (HKT), and Hat Yai (HDY).
According to him, the system will utilize facial recognition technology to enhance identification efficiency, decrease waiting times, and ensure a smoother journey for travelers.
“AOT is committed to creating a modern, enjoyable airport experience for passengers. The system, which has been thoroughly developed and tested, will reduce wait times at service points throughout AOT’s six airports,” Kerati said in a statement on Monday.
“Domestic passengers will be able to use the system from November 1, 2024, with international passengers gaining access starting December 1, 2024. All passengers must consent to the use of biometric data,” he added.
Kerati also confirmed that the biometric system is poised to improve convenience for travelers by shortening the time needed at service points, giving passengers more leisure time to shop, dine, or relax.
The system will enhance the existing Common Use Passenger Processing System (CUPPS), featuring biometric capabilities integrated across five interconnected systems, ensuring seamless data connectivity throughout the network.
“AOT is dedicated to modernizing airport facilities to better meet passenger needs and create an exceptional travel experience, in line with AOT’s vision of world-class airport management,” he stated.
For the fiscal year 2024 (October 2023 to September 2024), AOT reported handling over 119.29 million passengers across its airports, marking a 19.22 percent increase from the previous year.
This figure includes 72.67 million international passengers and 46.62 million domestic passengers.
“Total flights numbered 732,690, with international flights increasing by 29.63 percent, while domestic flights saw a slight decrease of 0.73 percent. Key airports such as Suvarnabhumi handled 60 million passengers, Don Mueang 29.15 million, and Phuket 16.4 million,” Kerati noted.
AOT anticipates passenger numbers will surpass 120 million for FY 2024 and projects they could reach up to 130 million by FY 2025.
