Thailand Announces 5-Day New Year Break To Promote Tourism

Thailand’s cabinet has officially approved an extended five-day New Year holiday, declaring Friday, January 2, 2026, a special public holiday. The move aims to boost domestic tourism, stimulate spending, and give the country’s travel and service sectors a strong start to the year.

This means the upcoming New Year break will run from Wednesday, December 31, 2025, to Sunday, January 4, 2026 — combining New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, the newly added Jan 2 holiday, and a full weekend of rest and celebration.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports welcomed the decision, calling it a timely step to encourage local travel and revive small businesses still facing global economic headwinds.

“This extended break is not just about celebration, it’s a strategic push to revitalise tourism and stimulate spending,” a government spokesperson said. “We expect a surge in hotel bookings, transport usage, and local commerce.”

The cabinet also confirmed that January 2, 2026, will be recognised as a bank holiday, ensuring all financial institutions close nationwide.

However, the private sector may implement its own policies, with employers advised to inform staff in advance about leave arrangements. Labour officials noted that while the day is officially sanctioned, companies retain the right to decide whether to observe it.

To maximise the long weekend, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is preparing nationwide promotional campaigns and special travel packages for both locals and foreign visitors.

Major provinces are expected to host themed festivals, concerts, and cultural events designed to spread tourism revenue across regions.
