The Thai government issued a statement on Wednesday morning affirming its commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty amid a recent border dispute with Cambodia, while also emphasising a peaceful resolution through bilateral cooperation.
In an announcement posted on its official Facebook page, the government stated that it places the utmost importance on protecting Thai sovereignty and territorial integrity.
It further stressed that any solution must be pursued through peaceful means, guided by international law and humanitarian principles.
The statement also referred to a skirmish that occurred on May 28 between Thai and Cambodian troops in the Chong Bok border area of Ubon Ratchathani province.
“The Thai force had to defend itself and the area of Thai sovereignty. The action complied with the principles of international law,” the statement said.
Following the incident, the Thai government said that officials from both nations engaged in close communication at all levels, including discussions between the two prime ministers.
Both sides have since agreed to cooperate to restore calm and normalcy along the shared border.
They will rely on established bilateral frameworks, including the Joint Boundary Committee, which is scheduled to convene in Cambodia on June 14.
In response to Cambodia’s suggestion that an international court or third party mediate the dispute, the Thai government maintained that the issue should continue to be addressed through direct bilateral dialogue.
The government concluded by stating that the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border remains stable and expressed confidence that a peaceful, mutually agreeable solution will be reached.
