Thailand’s Foreign Ministry is championing the new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) to attract foreign nationals interested in working remotely while exploring the country.
On September 19, Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa unveiled the DTV, tailored specifically for digital nomads planning longer stays in Thailand.
Digital nomads can boost the local economy by working remotely from Thailand and spending at local businesses, restaurants, hotels, and tourist sites.
“The DTV will facilitate foreigners who wish to stay in Thailand for an extended period and work remotely,” explained Mr. Maris.
He highlighted that some hotels in Phuket are now offering packages designed especially for digital nomads.
The application process for the DTV is streamlined, offering a hassle-free experience and the possibility for an extended visit.
This visa permits up to 180 days per entry, with an option to extend the stay for another 180 days.
Addressing the potential misuse of the current visa exemption system, Mr. Maris noted that the Foreign Ministry is rolling out the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system.
This system will improve security and simplify immigration processes for travelers with visa exemptions, issuing a unique QR code for easy presentation to immigration officials.
Mr. Maris also mentioned ongoing negotiations for a joint tourist visa with five ASEAN countries, aiming to boost regional tourism.
This effort is part of the “Six Countries, One Destination” initiative, promoting Thailand as a key travel hub in the region.
“Think of the Schengen visa, which allows tourists to travel to several European countries under one visa stamp,” Mr. Maris said.
