Thailand’s E-Visa To Go Global Beginning January Next Year

Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced a new electronic visa system that will be globally accessible starting January 1, 2025.

This announcement was made at a special launch event, led by Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, at Vithes Samosorn on December 17.

Worawut Pongprapapant, Director-General of the Department of Consular Affairs, shared that the department has spent over a decade developing this e-Visa system to simplify the visa application process through technology.

He mentioned that the initial e-Visa system was introduced in Beijing, China, in February 2019 and was later upgraded to a sticker-less format in September 2021.

This advanced THAI E-VISA system, available at www.thaievisa.go.th, will be integrated into 94 Royal Thai Embassies and Consulates-General worldwide, significantly modernizing the visa process.

Built around the “3A’s” principle — Apply, Anywhere, Anytime — the system eliminates the need for embassy queues and physical document submissions.

Applicants can use a seamless online system that allows real-time data exchange with key agencies like the Immigration Bureau and National Intelligence Agency, ensuring enhanced security.

Online payment facilities will also be available through a collaboration with Kasikorn Bank.

Initially, some applicants will need to show payment proof at Thai diplomatic missions, but the Ministry plans to enable full online payment functionality globally within six months.

“The e-Visa system will operate 24/7, regardless of holidays or office hours, allowing travelers to apply from anywhere outside Thailand at their convenience,” Worawut stated.

The system is designed to reinforce Thailand’s status as a top international travel destination.

Officials also noted that the existing policy allowing tourists from 93 countries to visit Thailand for up to 60 days without a visa will continue.

The e-Visa system will additionally accommodate other visa types, such as student and work visas.

Addressing concerns from the aviation sector, officials assured that travelers would receive their e-Visa via email, which they can present at airline check-in counters, providing a digital alternative to the traditional visa sticker.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader aim to streamline visa procedures and enhance Thailand’s profile as a prime destination for tourism, business, and international exchange.
