Two Arrests After Photocopied Notes Deposited at CDMs

Thai Police said on Tuesday that a young couple has been arrested after depositing hundreds of photocopied banknotes into their bank accounts through cash deposit machines or CDMs.

Authorities stated that the individuals were identified as Nathapong Nakpasing, 27, and Sasinapa Nakpasing, 21.

Deputy chief of Nakhon Sawan police Pol Col Narongsak Promtha said that the couple was taken into custody from their house in Moo 2 village tambon Thung Thong of Nong Bua district on Sunday. Officers also confiscated one fake 500 baht note, 609 fake 100 baht notes found in their possession, a color printer, a motorcycle, two mobile phones, and an account book for Kasikornbank, as reports indicated.

Their arrest came after a representative of Ban Telecom (2005) Co Ltd, the operator of “Boon Term” CDMs -which take cash deposits online- filled a complaint.

According to the representative, an unknown person had deposited a total of 60,900 bath distributed in fake 500 baht and 100 baht notes into a Kasikornbank account using the company’s CDMs. Police investigators then examined security camera recordings at the CDMs and saw a young couple that arrived on a motorcycle and made many deposits using the machines at different locations.

This led to the arrest of both suspects on Sunday, December 27.

Nathapong Nakpasing and Sasinapa Nakpasing allegedly confessed that they got the idea when watching Tik Tok videos on the app. The two then bought a printer and paper and ran off some fake currency.

The couple said they tried to deposit some of the notes using a Boon Term CDM.

Surprisingly, the machine accepted the photocopied notes and sent the amount to Mr. Nathapong’s Kasikornbank account. Then, emboldened by their success, they did it 61 times more, depositing a total of 60,900 baht into their bank accounts using fake notes.

They withdrew and spent some of the money credited to the account before getting arrested.

According to Pol Lt Col Thanit Nanthawisit, deputy chief of Muang police, the Ban Telecom representative admitted there were problems with the sensors on some of the corporation cash deposit machines.
