Typhoon Yagi To Bring Heavy Rains, Flash Flood to Thailand

The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued its seventh warning regarding Typhoon Yagi. Heavy rains and strong winds are anticipated in northern and northeastern Thailand, raising concerns about possible flash floods and landslides.

As of 4am on September 5, the typhoon was located in the upper South China Sea, positioned at 19.2°N latitude and 116.0°E longitude, with maximum sustained winds of approximately 185 kilometers per hour near its center. The storm is progressing slowly westward.

The forecast suggests Typhoon Yagi will cross over Hainan Island, China, and make its way to northern Vietnam between tomorrow and Saturday, September 7, with expectations of gradual weakening thereafter.

This weather system is set to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to Thailand’s northern and upper northeastern areas from tomorrow through the following day.

At the same time, a robust southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea, southern Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.

This monsoon is expected to cause significant rainfall in specific parts of Thailand, particularly in the eastern and southwestern southern regions, over the next couple of days.

Residents in these regions are urged to remain vigilant due to the potential for heavy rainfall and accumulated precipitation, which may trigger sudden floods and flash flooding. Areas particularly at risk are those near watercourses at the foothills and low-lying areas.

The Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand will see relatively strong winds, with wave heights of 3 to 3 meters, and possibly exceeding 3 meters during thunderstorms.

The lower Gulf of Thailand is expected to have wave heights of 1 to 2 meters, increasing during thunderstorms.

Those residing in these areas are advised to proceed with caution, refrain from sea activities in stormy regions, and keep small boats in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand docked until September 8, as reported by KhaoSod.

The public is encouraged to stay informed by following updates from the TMD, available through their website or by calling 0-2399-4012-13 and 1182, operational 24 hours.
