Biden Faces Growing Pressure To Drop Out of Presidential Race

US President Joe Biden was reportedly coming closer to withdrawing from the presidential race as concerns grew among his allies, including Barack Obama, over his diminishing prospects in the 2024 election.

As Biden, aged 81, battled Covid at his beach house, various reports surfaced indicating he considered ending his bid for reelection amid significant resistance from within his party.

According to The New York Times, insiders close to Biden believe he is coming to terms with the possibility of a November loss to his Republican rival, Donald Trump, and might exit the race, with one source commenting, “Reality is setting in.”

The article noted an insider predicting that Biden might soon endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.

Former President Obama has reportedly advised close associates that Biden should “seriously consider the viability of his candidacy,” as stated by the Washington Post. His office has not issued any statement.

Additionally, Axios reported that Democratic insiders indicated Biden might exit the race as early as this weekend, with an NBC report quoting someone close to Biden as saying, “We’re close to the end.”

Biden’s campaign faced a significant setback three weeks ago following a disastrous debate with Trump. Nevertheless, his campaign refuted these reports, maintaining that he was committed to running.

“He’s running for reelection. Baseless conjecture from anonymous sources isn’t a scoop,” stated campaign official T.J. Ducklo on X.

During a speech in North Carolina, Harris did not address the turmoil but commended Biden, drawing a sharp contrast between him and Donald Trump, describing it as “like night and day.”

She also criticized Trump’s new vice presidential choice, J.D. Vance, calling this election the “most existential, consequential, and important election of our lifetime.”

As Trump prepared for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Biden, still battling mild Covid symptoms and taking Paxlovid as prescribed by his doctor Kevin O’Connor, faced both personal and political isolation.

O’Connor noted that Biden’s health was stable and that he would continue his presidential duties.

The timing of Biden’s Covid diagnosis disrupted his campaign plans, forcing him to cancel a trip to Las Vegas and isolate at his holiday home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Biden reassured reporters on Wednesday that he was “doing well,” although he appeared frail while descending the steps of Air Force One.

A rising number of Democrats have publicly urged Biden to withdraw, including 20 House Representatives.

Top Democrats, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, reportedly met with Biden recently to express concerns that his campaign might jeopardize their chances in the upcoming election.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi privately told Biden he was unlikely to win and that his campaign could negatively impact the Democrats’ efforts to regain control of the House, according to reports from CNN and The New York Times.

Despite the ongoing political chaos and his health condition, White House National Security spokesman John Kirby assured that Biden was being well-informed by his staff.

However, the contrast with Donald Trump was striking, with Trump ready to accept the Republican nomination in Milwaukee while Biden hunkered down.

The Republican party, on the other hand, showed renewed unity after Trump, only three years younger than Biden at 78, survived an assassination attempt last Saturday, resulting in a bandaged ear.
