The father of Spain Euro 2024 star Lamine Yamal was rushed to the hospital after being stabbed in a car park on Wednesday evening, as reported by various media.
Mounir Nasraoui found himself under attack in the town of Mataro, Spain, where the incident occurred, and he was quickly transported to a medical facility.
Residents of the area said Nasraoui had been walking his dog when he got into an argument with some individuals, which escalated into a physical altercation before he was stabbed multiple times.
Following the attack, he was left in critical condition and was transported to Can Ruti Hospital in Badalona via ambulance.
Reports from Spanish news sources Relevo and Mundo Deportivo indicate that although Nasraoui is still hospitalized, he is ‘out of danger’.
Three suspects have been detained by Spanish police on charges of attempted murder, according to reports.
The ongoing investigation continues after the violent episode that occurred around 9:10 pm local time. Local police in Mataro have been contacting witnesses of the stabbing as part of their efforts to gather essential details about the incident.
Newly surfaced video footage shows an earlier altercation involving Nasraoui and other locals before he was taken away by the police.
Over the years, Nasraoui has been a staunch supporter of his son, who at 17 helped Spain clinch the European Championship title by defeating England.
Yamal, a standout player of the tournament, has been praised by his father, who believes he has the potential to surpass [Lionel] Messi in skill.
Nasraoui, a resident of Mataro’s Rocafonda neighborhood where Yamal grew up, celebrates his roots with a ‘304’ gesture during games, highlighting the local postcode.
Originally from Morocco, the 35-year-old father moved to Spain at the age of nine, met Yamal’s mother Sheila Ebana, and together they had their son in 2007.
Although he once aspired to be a professional footballer in Spain, he never reached the professional level and instead took on various jobs to support his family.
Nasraoui, who is two years younger than Yamal’s teammate Jesus Navas, traveled with his son across Germany as Spain triumphed in Euro 2024.
