A man has died after falling from the upper tier at Wembley Stadium during Oasis’ Saturday night concert, prompting an outpouring of shock and grief from the band and fans alike.
The incident occurred while Liam and Noel Gallagher were performing as part of their highly anticipated reunion tour. The man, believed to be in his 40s, was seated in the stadium’s highest section, nearly 50 metres above ground, when the fall took place.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 10:19pm. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said officers already on duty at the stadium responded immediately.
“A man – aged in his 40s – was found with injuries consistent with a fall. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene,” the spokesperson said. “The stadium was busy, and we believe it is likely a number of people witnessed the incident, or may knowingly or unknowingly have caught it on mobile phone video footage.”
Police are urging anyone with information or footage related to the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation.
In a statement released after the concert, Oasis said: “We are shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death of a fan at the show last night. Oasis would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved.”
The following night, the band paid tribute by dedicating their iconic track “Live Forever” to the deceased fan. “This one’s for all the people who can’t be here tonight, but who are here if you know what I mean, and aren’t they looking lovely. ‘Live Forever,’ “Liam Gallagher told the crowd at Wembley.
A fan seated in the lower tier later shared her account on social media, saying she witnessed paramedics attempting to revive the man.
“I was directly underneath in section 211. At first glance I thought it was a coat falling from the above tier but then I looked and saw the bloke on the concrete. It was horrific to see,” she wrote.
Wembley Stadium officials confirmed the incident in a statement: “Last night, Wembley Stadium medics, the London ambulance service and the police attended to a concertgoer who was found with injuries consistent with a fall.
“Despite their efforts, the fan very sadly died. Our thoughts go out to his family, who have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers.”
The Oasis reunion marks the first time in 16 years that Liam and Noel Gallagher have performed together.
The tour includes seven dates at Wembley and five shows in Manchester, the brothers’ hometown, before continuing across the US, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, and Australia. The tour is scheduled to conclude in South America this November.
