Britney Spears Reportedly Sells Rights to Her Music Catalogue

Britney Spears has sold the rights to her music catalogue to publishing company Primary Wave, according to a source familiar with the agreement.

A representative for Spears did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday, while a spokesperson for Primary Wave also declined to comment.

The transaction is valued at approximately $200 million, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal is confidential.

Spears, who released her debut album in 1999, is responsible for a string of chart-topping hits, including “Baby One More Time,” “Oops! I Did It Again!,” “Gimme More,” “Circus” and “Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman.”

The 44-year-old pop star was released from a court-ordered conservatorship in 2021 after 13 years. In her 2023 memoir, “The Woman in Me,” Spears described how others tightly controlled nearly every aspect of her personal and professional life.

The memoir sold more than 1.1 million copies in the United States during its first week of release. Universal Pictures later announced plans to adapt the book for the screen.

Since the end of her conservatorship, Spears married actor and fitness trainer Sam Asghari, though the couple later divorced. She has continued to attract attention online through her Instagram posts, which frequently show her dancing or sharing stock images accompanied by cryptic messages.

In an Instagram post shared last week, Spears wrote that she felt “incredibly lucky to even be alive” following what she described as mistreatment by her family, adding that she was “scared” of her relatives. The caption was later deleted, leaving only an image of an adult holding a baby’s hand.

Spears joins a growing list of high-profile artists who have sold their music catalogues in recent years.

Among them are Bob Dylan, who sold his recorded music to Sony Music Entertainment in 2022 and his songwriting catalogue to Universal Music Group in 2020, and Bruce Springsteen, who sold his catalogue to Sony Music for an estimated $500 million in 2021.

Primary Wave’s portfolio includes music from artists such as Stevie Nicks, as well as the estates of Prince and the Notorious B.I.G. According to the company’s website, the songs it represents include more than 1,000 Top 10 singles and over 400 No. 1 hits.
