Justin Timberlake has revealed that he is suffering from Lyme disease, a debilitating illness typically transmitted through tick bites that has become increasingly common across parts of the United States.
In a recent Instagram post, the Grammy-winning singer opened up about his private health battle for the first time.
“I’ve been battling some health issues, and was diagnosed with Lyme disease – which I don’t say so you feel bad for me – but to shed some light on what I’ve been up against behind the scenes,” Timberlake wrote.
He continued: “If you’ve experienced this disease or know someone who has – then you’re aware: living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically.”
“When I first got the diagnosis I was shocked for sure. But, at least I could understand why I would be on stage and in a massive amount of nerve pain or, just feeling crazy fatigue or sickness.”
Timberlake’s post follows more than a year on the road with his “Forget Tomorrow” world tour, which began in April 2024, shortly after the release of his sixth studio album, “Everything I Thought It Was.”
Throughout the tour, Timberlake faced criticism from fans on social media over what some described as underwhelming performances. In recent months, a number of observers and concertgoers expressed concern over signs of exhaustion and physical discomfort during his live shows.
Addressing those concerns directly, Timberlake said: “I was faced with a personal decision. Stop touring? Or, keep going and figure it out. I decided the joy that performing brings me far outweighs the fleeting stress my body was feeling. I’m so glad I kept going.”
He added: “Not only did I prove my mental tenacity to myself but, I now have so many special moments with all of you that I will never forget.”
“I was reluctant to talk about this because I was always raised to keep something like this to yourself. But I am trying to be more transparent about my struggles so that they aren’t misinterpreted.”
The singer’s candid statement was met with an outpouring of support from fans. “You are so loved, and we’ll be here supporting whatever you decide to do next,” one commenter wrote.
Another added: “Justin you are so appreciated. Thank you for showing up for us time and time again. Take care of yourself. We love you and will continue to ride for you.”
Despite the health challenges, Timberlake’s tour has performed strongly. According to Billboard, the “Forget Tomorrow” world tour placed him in the No. 10 spot on its midyear Boxscore report, grossing $73.2 million across 41 shows as of late May.
Timberlake joins a growing list of prominent musicians who have gone public with their Lyme disease diagnoses. Avril Lavigne, Justin Bieber, and Shania Twain have all previously shared their experiences with the illness, which can cause symptoms such as fever, fatigue, chills, joint pain, and a distinctive skin rash.
Experts warn that Lyme disease can persist for months or even years. In the U.S., tick populations have surged in recent years, aided by warmer summers linked to climate change, creating more favorable breeding conditions for the parasitic arachnids.
According to data from universities and U.S. federal health agencies, the country has seen a notable rise in tick-related emergency room visits. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that May and June 2025 marked the highest number of ER visits for tick bites during those months since 2019.
Timberlake, 43, began his career as a “Mouseketeer” on “The All-New Mickey Mouse Club” in 1993, alongside future pop icons Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
He rose to fame as a member of boy band NSYNC before launching a solo career in 2002. Over the past two decades, he has become one of the best-selling pop artists of his generation.
