Kim Kardashian Declared Single, Drops “West” From Name

A court decided Wednesday that Kim Kardashian is no longer Kim Kardashian West, granting her plea to legally dissolve her marriage to Kanye West while they work out the outstanding issues in their divorce case.

According to court records seen by Globe, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Steve Cochran annulled Kardashian and West’s marriage status at a hearing, rendering them both legally single.

Kardashian requested in December that the matter of her marriage to West (who is now legally known as Ye) be separated from other remaining aspects in their divorce case. Her attorneys said there was “no need to preserve” the legal partnership, so she sought to end it.

“Irreconcilable differences have led to the irremediable breakdown of the marriage, and there is no possibility of saving the marriage through counseling or other means,” lawyers acting for Kim Kardashian commented. “The continued maintenance of technical marital status between Petitioner and Respondent serves no useful purpose.”

Kardashian and Ye “both deserve the chance to start new lives,” according to a document submitted with the motion. In addition, the petitions requested that the court change Kardashian’s name to Kimberly Noel Kardashian. That request was also granted, according to court documents.

During the hearing, Judge Cochran reportedly asked Kardashian a series of yes or no questions, including “Did issues, arguments, and differences cause a dissolution of your marriage?” as well as “Are you seeking to become single?” before granting her request. She answered yes to all of them.

In February 2021, Kardashian filed for divorce from Ye. Before Wednesday’s ruling, the former famous couple had been legally married for more than seven years.

Her marital initials, KKW, also served as the name for her beauty and fragrance company during their partnership. KKW Beauty is set to relaunch later this year, with an emphasis on skincare and, according to reports, a new name.

Her representatives will not comment on the specifics, but government documents show that Kardashian has trademarked SKKN by Kim after filing for divorce. Everything from cosmetics and vitamins to home items are set to be part of the new brand.

The judge’s judgment comes after Ye has been heavily chastised for his management of his divorce and harassment of his now-ex-wife and her new lover, Pete Davidson. Last week, Kardashian said that Ye’s assaults on social media had caused her “emotional turmoil,” and that she hoped that ending their marriage would help him recognize that their love was finished and, in turn, let them “peacefully co-parent peacefully.”

On Aug. 5, the former couple will appear in court for a status hearing in their divorce proceedings.
