Tobey Maguire’s ex-wife, Jennifer Meyer, has defended him after he was seen at Michael Rubin’s Fourth of July party with model Lily Chee.
The former Spider-Man actor, 49, was spotted with 20-year-old social media influencer Lily Chee at the annual white party hosted by Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin in The Hamptons, New York.
Celebrity news agency Backgrid captured photos of Maguire, dressed entirely in white, standing beside Chee, who was wearing a white mid-length dress with cut-outs.
At the event, Maguire appeared to place his hand on Chee’s lower back while they were photographed leaving the high-profile July 4th party.
Following the release of the photos, there was rampant speculation online that Maguire and Chee might be dating, while others criticized their nearly 30-year age difference, with a comment on X, pointing out, “She wasn’t even born when the first Spider-Man film came out.”
Neither Maguire nor Chee has publicly commented on the rumours circulating online.
During this flurry of speculation, a social media user decided to comment on a post by Maguire’s ex-wife, Jennifer Meyer.
A user named @hkello3 made a now-deleted comment on Instagram questioning Meyer about her ex-husband’s actions, asking, “Why is your ex-husband with someone three years older than your daughter?”
Meyer responded by defending the actor, explaining that he was “kindly” helping Chee to her car when they were photographed together.
“I don’t usually respond to such nonsense, but he was kindly helping a friend to her car, being a good guy,” she wrote on Instagram, according to a screenshot shared on Reddit.
“And now he has been blasted online for dating someone he is not. But thank you for your rude comment, I hope it made you feel better today. Wishing you love and light.”
The mother of two also refuted the online rumours in another comment, highlighting her strong relationship with her ex-husband.
“I’m disengaging after this,” Meyer added. “But don’t believe everything you read (I’m sure you were taught that somewhere). Tobey is as good a guy as it gets.”
Maguire and Meyer, who married in 2007, separated in 2016 and officially filed for divorce in October 2020, seeking joint custody of their two children: daughter Ruby, born in November 2006, and son Otis, born in May 2009.
Despite their separation, they continue to co-parent amicably. In 2022, Meyer described her divorce on The World’s First Podcast as “the most beautiful experience of my life.”
“I would literally do anything in the world for Tobey. He is my brother. I love him to death, and we have the most beautiful family,” Meyer told podcast co-hosts Sara and Erin Foster at the time.
“The work is a motherf***er. I’m not gonna lie. And we did a lot of work to stay on track and remain a family. It was a choice and it was trusting that the universe has our back,” she said.
The annual Independence Day celebration at Rubin’s in Bridgehampton, New York, was a lavish event with numerous celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Tom Brady, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and others.
The party featured performances by artists like Mary J Blige and Lil Wayne and was catered by renowned restaurants such as Nobu and Lucali, according to Vogue. The night concluded with a fireworks display in true Fourth of July fashion.
