Liverpool came from behind to win a thriller against AC Milan at Anfield in their Champions League opener on Wednesday.
‘The Reds’ took the lead after nine minutes into the game when former Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori deflected a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold into his own net.
Five minutes later Liverpool had a chance to double their lead but Mo Salah missed his first penalty for Liverpool in four years.
It seemed like Liverpool will go on the break with a lead but AC Milan turned things completely around in the final minutes of the first half as Ante Rebic and Brahim Diaz scored in the 42nd and 44th.
Klopp’s side regrouped in the second half and was determined to come back in the match. They put intense pressure from the begging of the second half and Salah scored the equalizer after four minutes.
As the pressure was building and the fans were turning up the volume, Jordan Henderson scored his first goal in seven Champions League seasons for a 3-2 lead.
Klopp said that returning in front of a packed Anfield was everything he hoped for.
“It was nearly 100% what I hoped for,” Klopp said. “It was a brilliant game, very exciting and very entertaining with 10-15 minutes where we lost a little bit of the plot,” said the German after the match.
“We were not compact anymore and got carried away with our own football. We complicated matters. Our defensive line was too deep, the midfield was not closing the gaps anymore and so they could pass through us and score a few goals. But we adapted at half-time and played again really good football, scored two wonderful goals.”
“Definitely everyone can see now with Milan, who came from pot four – that’s funny, the quality that is in this group. It is obvious we need each point in this group to get through.”
