Wales Lose to Italy but Progress to Last-16 of Euro 2020

Wales suffered a bitter 1-0 defeat to Italy in their final Group A match on Sunday. The Azzurri were a superior side and imposed their style of play on the Stadio Olimpico pitch in front of their home crowd.

Bastoni came close to catching goalkeeper Danny Ward out with a powerful shot from outside the box, but he made a firm save.

Chris Gunter almost put Wales ahead with a dangerous header from a corner, but the ball went just wide of the right-hand post.

In the 39th minute, Marco Verratti took a free kick and sent a low cross into the box. Matteo Pessina managed to get in a rare shot to send the ball into the back of the net.

The other match of the day also belonged to Group A: Switzerland defeated Turkey 3-1 in Baku (Azerbaijan).

After this combination of results, Italy finished top of the group with 9 points and a goal difference of +7. Despite their defeat, Wales managed to qualify for the next round in second place thanks to their 4 points and goal difference of +1.

Switzerland finished in third place with 4 points (goal difference -1) and put their hopes on being one of the best four third-placed teams, while Turkey finished bottom with no points.
