On Friday, it emerged that the trilogy fight between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder has been postponed because the Briton tested positive for Covid-19.
Fury received the news of his infection on Thursday and held talks with medical experts to decide what to do about it. Ultimately, the option chosen was to delay the fight, which could be rescheduled for October.
According to reports in the British press, this setback has caused Fury great frustration. On the other hand, Wilder’s manager Shelly Finkel said his fighter “is disappointed”.
The WBC has also informed about the postponement and promoters Top Rank are expected to make an official announcement on Friday.
Thus, the Fury v Wilder fight meets its umpteenth rock in the road.
It is worth remembering that the Briton defeated the American in February 2020 to become WBC champion. 14 months earlier, the two fighters had fought to a thrilling, hard-fought draw in Las Vegas.
Since Fury’s victory, the two men have not been able to meet again in the ring. Complications caused by the Covid-19 pandemic prevented the rematch.
Fury arranged a fight with fellow countryman Anthony Joshua in which all three heavyweight titles would be at stake. However, an arbitration hearing determined that Fury was contractually obligated to face Wilder in a third fight.
