Thai Court Dismisses Petition on Pita’s Renomination Denial

The Constitutional Court dismissed an appeal on Wednesday from the election winner, the Move Forward Party, regarding a parliamentary decision that prevented its prime ministerial nominee from a second nomination.

This action nearly ends the chances of the progressive Move Forward helming the next government and sets the stage for another prime ministerial vote in the assembly potentially this week. The court stated their decision was reached with full agreement.

The court explained its ruling, noting its refusal to accept the case due to its submission by over 20 individuals who did not count the prime ministerial nominee among them.

“Their rights were not violated and they did not have the rights to file the complaint,” they declared.

Supporters of Move Forward Party sought the court’s opinion about the legitimacy of a July 19 resolution by legislators that hindered Pita’s second nomination for the prime minister post after an unsuccessful first attempt.

It’s anticipated that the Parliament will soon organize a voting session for the prime ministerial nominee, businessman and political newcomer Srettha Thavisin from the runner-up Pheu Thai Party.

The May elections saw Move Forward Party triumph, backed heavily by young and city-based constituents for its forward-thinking policies, challenging both business monopolies and the military’s political influence.

However, their ambition to establish a government couldn’t gather sufficient backing.

There was widespread resistance to their proposal, notably from senators appointed by the military, to modify the lese majeste legislation so it isn’t exploited solely for political reasons.
