Tropical Storm Noru To Hit Thailand on Thursday, Experts Say

Typhoon Noru, which hit the Philippines and is now threatening Vietnam, will weaken to a tropical storm before crossing into Thailand on Thursday, the Meteorological Department announced.

On Tuesday, the Meteorological Department’s director-general Chomparee Chompurat said Typhoon Noru was about 380 kilometers southeast of Danang at 10:00 a.m.

The expert predicted it would make landfall in central Vietnam today before weakening to a tropical storm and reaching the Central and Lower Northeast on Thursday.

While Typhoon Noru is expected to downgrade into a depression beginning Thursday, the storm could bring heavy rain to the north, northeast, east, and south, causing flash floods, strong waves along seacoasts, and runoff into mountains.

The Central Plain regions, including Greater Bangkok, would also be affected.

According to the Meteorological Department’s forecasts, the Central Plains provinces that can expect heavy rain today are Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Greater Bangkok, Lop Buri, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Songkhram, Samut Sakhon, Saraburi, Sing Buri.

Heavy rain has also been forecast today in the southern provinces of Krabi, Phangnga, Phuket, Ranong, Satun, and Trang.

In the East, Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi, Chon Buri, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Rayong, and Trat provinces will also experience heavy rain.

The Meteorological Department has also forecast heavy rain on Thursday in the following regions:

  • Chiang Mai, Kamphaeng Phet, Lampang, Lamphun, Nan, Phrae, Phetchabun, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Sukhothai, Tak, and Uttaradit in the North.

  • Amnat Charoen, Bung Kan, Buri Ram, Chaiyaphum, Kalasin, Khon Kaen, Loei, Maha Sarakham, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Nong Khai, Roi Et, Sakon Nakhon, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, and Yasothon in the Northeast.

  • Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Chai Nat, Greater Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Lop Buri, Nakhon Pathom, Nakhon Sawan, Ratchaburi, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Saraburi, Sing Buri, Suphan Buri and Uthai Thani in the Central Plain.

  • Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi, Chon Buri, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Rayong, Sa Kaeo, and Trat in the East.

  • Chumphon, Krabi, Phangnga, Phetchaburi, Phuket, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Ranong, Satun, Surat Thani, and Trang in the South.

According to the Meteorological Department’s latest report, heavy rains are also forecast on Friday in:

  • Chiang Mai, Kamphaeng Phet, Lampang, Lamphun, Mae Hong Son, Phetchabun, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Phrae, Sukhothai, Tak and Uttaradit in the North.

  • Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Loei, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Nong Khai, and Udon Thani in the Northeast.

  • Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Chai Nat, Greater Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Lop Buri, Nakhon Pathom, Nakhon Sawan, Ratchaburi, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Saraburi, Sing Buri, Suphan Buri, and Uthai Thani in the Central Plain.

  • Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi, Chon Buri, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Rayong, Sa Kaeo, and Trat in the East.

  • Chumphon, Phangnga, Phetchaburi, Phuket, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Ranong in the South.

Meanwhile, Mr. Chomparee has asked small boats to stay ashore in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand for the whole week.
