Thai Banks to Require Facial Recognition for Big Withdrawals

From malls to airports and even convenience stores like 7-Eleven, facial recognition technology has become increasingly popular in Thailand.

Now, in the latest move, all banks in the country are mandating that clients provide their facial data to the National Digital ID platform.

The inevitability of handing over one’s identity grows as all banks in the kingdom mandate facial recognition for withdrawals of THB50,000 (US$1,500) and above, daily transfers exceeding THB200,000, or increasing transfer limits beyond THB50,000.

“Please bring your passport or other identification documents and passbook to update your latest personal information and take a facial photo at any Bangkok Bank branch nationwide,” reads a text from Bangkok Bank recently sent to customers.

These new regulations will be implemented next month. The adjustments are the latest in the so-called “Know Your Business” policies designed to combat money laundering and fraud.

In the meantime, the major banks have been consulted to gain insight into their plans for collecting facial data.

Some banks offer this service through their mobile app, while others provide the option at their ATMs.

However, the majority of the banks require customers to visit a physical branch. To make the information easier to understand, the banks have been organized in a logical manner based on the color and order of the visible spectrum.

For instance, Bangkok Bank, represented by dark blue, requires a visit to a branch. Krung Thai Bank, represented by light blue, provides the option at either an ATM or a branch.

Kasikorn Bank, represented by green, can be accessed through their K Plus app, ATM, or branch. Ayutthaya/Krungsri, represented by yellow, requires a visit to a branch.

The Government Savings Bank, represented by hot pink, also requires a visit to a branch. Finally, Siam Commercial Bangkok, SCB, represented by purple, requires a visit to a branch.

For banks that claim it can be done through their apps (Kasikorn!), search for an NDID option. Attempts to access related services in several apps on Tuesday were unsuccessful.
