‘The Murderer’ Marks Netflix’s First-Ever Movie in Isan Dialect

The highly-anticipated film “The Murderer” is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on July 27, marking the first occasion for the streaming giant to showcase a movie in the Isan dialect.

Located in the northeastern part of Thailand, the movie boasts a cast that includes Phetthai Vongkhamlao, Eisaya Hosuwan, James Laver, Sunaree Ratchasima, and Sawanee Utoomma.

It also introduces local characters originating from the region. Both leading and supporting actors hail from Isan heritage, making them adept in the dialect, and ensuring a realistic portrayal of the roles.

Under the direction of Wisit Sasanatieng, “The Murderer” merges elements of murder mystery, dark humour, and sharp visual styles, thereby shattering the usual perception of Isan films as mere rural comedies.

It narrates the tale of a gruesome killing spree in a secluded location on the night a tropical storm is forecasted to hit the village.

Multiple corpses, dead due to varying causes, are discovered scattered throughout the area, and the killer’s identity remains a mystery.

With the burden of resolving the case, Inspector Nawat begins to suspect Earl, a stranger, a visitor, a foreigner, and potentially a murderer harbouring a grim secret.

Adding an intriguing layer to the Isan-style murder investigation, the film also includes a biting satire of contemporary culture.

“The screenplay is full of humour and satire. It reflects our society and current circumstances, such as the media’s sensationalization of murder cases,” director Wisit commented.

“Many cases are eerily similar and the audience desires to know the truth. This movie’s screenplay is based on people’s curiosity.”

“When we consume media, we only see what is presented to us — we seldom know the whole truth. This movie will enlighten us on what reality is like,” Wisit reveals.

A trademark feature that audiences will identify in director Wisit’s creations is the vibrant colour palette used in the sets and outfits, harmoniously complementing each other.

This visual flair and scenic setup harken back to the director’s earlier works like Tears Of The Black Tiger and Citizen Dog, and are distinctly visible in this film.

These lively hues serve a crucial role in enhancing the mood and transforming it into a stylish murder film.
